A semitruck pulling a wide load south on U.S. Highway 287 on March 3 about 4.5 miles south of the Choteau city limits hit a guardrail damaging about 30 feet of energy-absorbing galvanized metal.

The accident occurred about 10:45 a.m.

A front pilot car was traveling ahead of the big rig flagging vehicles to move off the highway. Very few vehicles were traveling north at that time of day although a grain truck with pup had to turn around and find another way into town while the big rig was stopped.

The mangled guardrail, designed to curl away from the roadway, was hit end-on, but the identical guardrail on the northbound side of the highway was undamaged in the accident.

The oversized load of the semitruck extended out over the pavement when the big rig was only in the southbound lane, but it had about a one-foot clearance on either side of the highway when the semitruck traveled on the centerline.

Teton County Deputy Mike Stanhope responded to the accident and waited for the Montana Highway Patrol officer to arrive. A Montana Department of Transportation crew responding with equipment, detached the curled W-beam of the guardrail about two hours later.
